Sorry, I've just always wanted to jokingly use the "one weird trick" trope. Although maybe in this case it's not entirely a joke - nor is it all that weird. In 2018 I started writing a new novel, which I had so much fun with at the beginning. Yet I've … Continue reading My one weird trick for revitalizing a project

Shamefully, I have yet to read Joan Didion, but th Shamefully, I have yet to read Joan Didion, but this quote has stuck with me since I randomly encountered it in the wilds of the internet years ago.

Early in my freelancing career, an older man chided me for not having an encyclopedic knowledge of predicates, modifiers, adverbial clauses, blah blah. He said that I couldn't be a good copywriter without that knowledge.

It almost made me give up freelancing.

But of course, I didn't give up, and twelve years later I can happily say not a single client has cast doubt upon what I've written for them. And I'm equally happy to say that when I discuss a client's content, I don't need to lecture them about prepositions. Instead, we have conversations about the feeling of a sentence, the intent of a paragraph, how the words can be shifted, tightened, or changed to express a point differently.

Some people have an natural talent for singing, or painting, or carpentry. My thing is grammar and spelling, and has been all my life. Being able to use this to help my clients tell impactful stories has been infinitely rewarding.

How do you celebrate when reaching a milestone on How do you celebrate when reaching a milestone on a creative project?

For me it's usually sushi. I don't know if it's the presentation or something else, but sushi just feels like a celebratory meal to me.

That said, I am half-Filipino, so I consider almost any meal to be worthy of commemorating a creative milestone! 🥂

🙋🏻‍♀️ Can anyone relate? Even though I 🙋🏻‍♀️ Can anyone relate? Even though I'm a morning person, I'm terrible at a morning routine. The only constant is coffee.

Because I work from home, I try to leave a bit of time between the coffee and the start of my work day. One of the earliest mistakes I made in my freelancing career was rolling out of bed and right over to my computer. 🙅🏻‍♀️ Terrible for my mood!

Sometimes I read before starting work, sometimes I catch up on messages, sometimes I do some novel work, and once in a VERY blue moon I journal.

Over the years I've found that it's not necessarily the specific acts of a morning routine that work best for me, but simply having space at the start of my day to ease into things.

What's your morning routine? What do you love about it?

📸 Aside from writing novels and short stories, 📸 Aside from writing novels and short stories, photography is another creative interest of mine. While I haven't been doing it as long as I've been writing, I've definitely been at it a long time (swipe for a picture of me at age 21 hoisting a camera that used a 3.5" floppy disk instead of a memory card)!⠀
⠀
I can't say that I'm an expert at it - I'm notoriously awful at remembering what do to in manual mode, for example - but I love it. Maybe it's because I'm so used to expressing myself with words. Sometimes stepping back and activating a more visual part of my brain makes room for other ideas, new thoughts.⠀

What creative hobbies do you have aside from your main passion?⠀

When I talk about copywriting for creative entrepr When I talk about copywriting for creative entrepreneurs, I’m picturing someone who’s building a business in one of the creative fields - someone who'd likely consider themselves "a creative."

They have a drive to express themselves through an artistic or aesthetically pleasing way, whether it’s photography, writing, art, dance, music – and so on! And they’ve also found a way to make money from this passion.

While traditional entrepreneurs can definitely be creative in the way they do business, a “creative entrepreneur” is someone who runs a business in one of the creative industries.

And, important to know: visual arts isn’t the only creative field. For example, I consider myself a creative entrepreneur because I make my living helping clients tell their stories with engaging and unique writing. But if you ever saw my attempts at drawing almost anything, you’d recoil in horror.

So, if you’re starting or growing a creative small business, but the thought of a paintbrush makes you break out in hives – don’t fret! You’re still a creative entrepreneur!

If you’re anything like me as a creative entrepr If you’re anything like me as a creative entrepreneur, you’ve wondered how you can define your business and help you find your ideal clients or customers. For me, identifying a few creative core principles has been the key in finding creative fulfillment while also keeping my business humming along nicely.

Ask yourself these questions:

» What kinds of clients/customers do I love working with the most?
» What kinds of projects have been the most fulfilling to work on?
» What kinds of projects have I done the best work on?
» What are my dealbreakers when it comes to clients or projects?
» What do I respond to when interacting with brands?
» What colours, imagery, and fonts do I like best?
» What impact do I want to make?
» How would I be described by those who know me well?
» Why did I start my creative business?

Are there any words that jump out at you right away, or beliefs and moods that feel foundational to your creative business?

Once you’ve picked out three core principles, be sure that you keep them in mind when it comes to anything you do with your creative business.

Let me know what three things jump out at you!

“When nothing is sure, everything is possible.”

Some inspiring words from Margaret Drabble, one of my favourite authors. I’ve always loved the little spark of nervous excitement this quote makes me feel. And when working on my own creative projects, the times when I’ve felt at a dead end where often the times I just flipped the proverbial table and uncovered something really cool.

Have you ever felt creative inspiration when it made the least amount of sense?

Nice to meet you! 👋🏼 I’m Samantha, a copyw Nice to meet you! 👋🏼 I’m Samantha, a copywriter offering engaging storytelling and content strategy for creative entrepreneurs who want to grow authentically.

I’ve been freelancing since 2009 (😱) and on Instagram since 2011 (😱), so thought I would finally merge the two.

I help my clients make money with their creativity, whether it’s on the side or full-time. I give them effective copy that respects their personality and vision. I’m a down-to-earth daydreamer, and my content is low on trendy gimmicks and high on practical strategy.

When I’m not working on novels or stories, I’m usually reading, wandering in the forest with my husband, playing a video game, taking photos, or boring my loved ones with a random historical fact. I work from my sunny home office, with my dog snoring in her bed next to my desk.

I look forward to sharing thoughts on creativity and getting to know you!
